The department is responsible for creating a policy framework to expand Australia's resource base, increase the international competitiveness of our resources sector and improve the regulatory regime, consistent with the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable development. The department is also responsible for the administration of the Commonwealth Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 and its associated regulations.

The National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator, also known as NOPTA or the Titles Administrator, is responsible for the day-to-day administration of all petroleum and greenhouse gas titles in Commonwealth waters in Australia. NOPTA is the first point of contact for matters relating to offshore titles administration. For further information see nopta.gov.au.
Led by the department’s Chief Economist, Mark Cully, the Office of the Chief Economist provides economic advice, analysis and statistics on topics of interest to the department and our Ministers. Our expertise rests in industry policy, innovation, sectoral analysis, energy and resources, programme evaluation and macroeconomic issues that affect business.
In addition, the Office produces major publications, research papers and statistics on topics of interest to the department and our Ministers. Findings are intended to elicit comments, stimulate debate and contribute to providing a strong evidence base for the department’s programmes.
